Goodman and Amana furnace fault codes
Goodman and Amana furnaces share control boards and share fault codes. What a given code means depends on which board your furnace has — and the same flash count means different things across the range.

Goodman and Amana are the same manufacturer and use the same integrated furnace controls, so a code list for one applies to the other. Three different diagnostic systems appear across the range, and knowing which one you are looking at is the first step: older single-LED boards flash a count, later boards show a two-character alphanumeric code on a small display, and the GMEC96 and AMEC96 use a three-colour LED where the colour carries as much meaning as the count. The model number on the rating plate tells you which.

Worth knowing before you count
Six flashes means a rollout switch on a GMS or GMH board, but on a GMSS9 or AMSS9 it covers a rollout limit or a blown control fuse — a serious combustion fault and a minor electrical one, sharing a count. And on the GMEC96 three-colour boards, one red flash and one amber flash mean completely different things.
How Goodman furnaces signal codes
On the three-colour GMEC96 boards, read the colour before the count: red is always a fault, green is cooling or standby, and amber is mostly — but not entirely — heating status. One and two amber flashes are normal first and second stage heat, yet rapid amber is a low flame sense warning and three and four amber flashes are thermostat wiring faults, so colour narrows the meaning without settling it. On every board, watch several full cycles, since codes repeat after a pause and a partial count is the most common wrong answer. One Goodman-specific trap deserves its own sentence: on these controls a failed igniter and a bad earth ground share a single code — 8 flashes, E7, or rapid flashing depending on the board — because the control cannot tell them apart, a gap Goodman documented in service bulletin SF-024. Checking the ground connection costs nothing; an igniter bought against a grounding fault fixes nothing.
The Goodman codes people look up most
One flash and E0 — the lockout after failed ignition attempts — lead the searches, and they usually trace back to something cheaper than a lockout sounds. Three flashes and E2 are the pressure switch refusing to close, a draft question; four flashes and E3 are the open high limit, an airflow question. Seven flashes and E6, the weak flame signal, is the dirty-flame-sensor code. And E5, the open low-voltage fuse, matters because it can present as a completely dark furnace rather than as a code at all.
What the common Goodman fixes cost
The seven-flash and E6 weak flame signal usually resolves with flame sensor cleaning at $80–200. The 8-flash and E7 igniter code is $150–350 installed when the igniter really has failed — with the grounding check done first, for the SF-024 reason above. Pressure switch codes run $150–400 with the flue ruled out first; an open limit is $150–350 plus finding the airflow cause. E5's open fuse is a $5–150 repair that impersonates a $400–900 dead board, and the b-series blower codes on communicating models land in ECM territory: $700–1,200, or $900–1,500+ for variable-speed.
