Goodman furnace LED off: No power to the furnace, or an internal control fault
A diagnostic LED that is completely dark means the control has no power or has failed internally. Before assuming the board is dead, check the things that cut power to a furnace by design.
Applies to: Goodman GMS, GMP, GMH, GMV8, GMV9, GMVC96 and Amana AMH, AMV9 series gas furnaces. On Goodman GMSS9 and Amana AMSS9 the equivalent condition is described as no 115 volt power to the furnace or no 24 volt power to the control.
What it means
The diagnostic LED is powered by the control board, so a dark LED means the board is not running. That has a mundane explanation far more often than a serious one, because a furnace has several deliberate ways of removing its own power. The blower door switch cuts 115 volts whenever the panel is off, which is why the LED goes dark the moment you open the furnace to look at it — a genuinely confusing design if you do not know about it. Beyond that, the furnace has a service switch that looks like a light switch, a dedicated breaker, and a low voltage fuse on the board itself, any of which will produce the same dark LED.
Most common causes
- The blower compartment door is off or not seated, opening the door switch. The LED cannot be lit while you are looking at it with the panel removed.
- The furnace service switch has been turned off — it looks like an ordinary light switch and is often mistaken for one.
- The circuit breaker for the furnace has tripped or been switched off.
- The low voltage fuse on the control board has blown, usually because of a short in the thermostat wiring.
- A failed transformer, so there is no 24 volt supply.
- A genuinely failed control board.
- A blown fuse or disconnected wiring in the 115 volt supply to the furnace.
How to diagnose it
- Check the service switch near the furnace first. It is the most common answer and takes a second.
- Check the breaker panel for a tripped furnace breaker.
- Understand the door switch before concluding anything. Some furnaces have a sight glass so the LED can be read with the panel on; if yours does not, the LED being dark while the panel is off tells you nothing.
- Check whether anything else on the same circuit has lost power.
- Note whether the thermostat display is blank. A furnace-powered thermostat going dark at the same time points at the low voltage side.
How to fix it
- Turn the service switch back on, or reset the breaker, if either was off. If the breaker trips again immediately, stop and call a technician — a repeatedly tripping breaker is a fault, not an inconvenience.
- Refit the blower door properly. A door that is not seated holds the switch open and the furnace will not run at all.
- A blown control board fuse, a failed transformer, or a failed board is technician work. A blown fuse in particular usually means a short somewhere in the low voltage wiring, and simply replacing it without finding the short blows the next one too.
- If the furnace has been flooded or the area around it has been wet, do not power it up at all. Call a technician.
Notes
The door switch catches almost everyone at least once. You take the panel off to read the diagnostic LED, and taking the panel off is what turns the LED off. If your furnace has a sight glass, read the code through it with everything closed.
