Goodman furnace b0: Blower motor is not running
b0 means the control asked the blower motor to run and it did not. On a furnace with a variable-speed motor this stops heating entirely, because the furnace will not fire without air moving.
Applies to: Goodman GMVC96, GMVM97, GCVC96, GCVM97 and Amana AMVC96, AMVM97 series gas furnaces with a variable-speed ECM blower motor and a two-character display.
What it means
Variable-speed blower motors have their own electronics and communicate with the furnace control rather than simply being switched on. The control commands a speed and expects confirmation the motor is turning. b0 means it asked and got nothing back. Because a furnace that fires without a blower running will overheat within minutes, the control treats this as a hard stop rather than something to work around. The fault sits in one of three places: the motor itself, the power feeding it, or the communication between the motor and the board — and from the code alone these are not distinguishable.
Most common causes
- A failed blower motor or a failed motor control module, which on an ECM motor is a module attached to the motor itself.
- No high voltage supply reaching the motor.
- A loose or disconnected motor power connector.
- A loose or damaged communication harness between the motor and the control board.
- A seized blower wheel or an obstruction physically preventing rotation.
- A failed control board not sending the command.
- A blower door switch not made, so power is not reaching the motor circuit.
How to diagnose it
- Check the blower door is properly seated. The door switch cuts power to the furnace, and a door not fully closed produces a range of confusing symptoms.
- Note whether the blower ever runs — on a fan-only thermostat setting, or during cooling. A motor that runs in one mode and not another points at the command rather than the motor.
- Listen at the start of a cycle. A motor attempting to start and failing sounds different from one that does nothing at all.
- Note whether the fault is intermittent. Intermittent b0 with successful runs in between often points at a connector rather than a failed motor.
How to fix it
- Refit the blower door properly if it was not seated.
- Everything else is technician work. ECM blower motors run on high voltage, hold a charge in their electronics after power is removed, and are not a component to investigate without training.
- Do not run the furnace in heat with a blower that is not working. The limit switch will stop it, but repeatedly overheating the heat exchanger is what cracks it.
- Ask the technician to check the harness and connectors before condemning the motor. ECM motors are among the more expensive furnace parts and connector faults imitate motor failure closely.
Notes
ECM motor modules store energy after the furnace is switched off. This is one of the specific reasons the blower compartment of a variable-speed furnace is not a place for homeowner investigation, even with the power off at the breaker.

What the fix costs
These furnaces carry variable-speed ECM blowers, which puts a full replacement at the top of the blower motor cost guide: $900–1,500+ installed, against $700–1,200 for a standard ECM and $400–700 for the PSC motors older furnaces use. Before that number lands, two cheaper outcomes deserve their turn. The guide notes that an ECM is a motor plus a small computer, and sometimes only the module end has failed and can be replaced separately — worth asking about explicitly. And a motor that never received its command is a control or harness question, not a motor question at all. DIY or call a pro?
Nothing inside the blower compartment is homeowner territory — the circuit is line voltage and the diagnosis is electrical from the first step. What you can do is listen and report: on a call for heat, does the motor hum, click, twitch, or stay perfectly silent? Silence points one way, humming another, and that observation survives even if the fault is intermittent by the time the technician arrives. Note also that the furnace refusing to fire is correct behaviour here, not a second fault — the control will not light burners over a dead blower, which is exactly the interlock you want enforced while you wait for the visit.
