Goodman furnace b9: Low indoor airflow
b9 means the furnace is moving less air than it should. It is the most useful diagnostic code a furnace produces, because it catches the condition that causes overheating before the limit switch has to.
Applies to: Goodman GMVC96, GMVM97, GCVC96, GCVM97 and Amana AMVC96, AMVM97 series gas furnaces with a variable-speed ECM blower motor and a two-character display.
What it means
A variable-speed system knows what airflow it is commanding and can tell when it is not achieving it. b9 reports that gap. What makes it valuable is timing: restricted airflow is behind a large share of furnace faults, and on a conventional furnace the first symptom is usually the high limit switch tripping — by which point the heat exchanger has already been overheated. b9 appears before that. Treated as a prompt rather than an annoyance, it is the code most likely to prevent an expensive failure, because the conditions it reports are the conditions that crack heat exchangers over time.
Most common causes
- A clogged air filter, or one far more restrictive than the system was designed for.
- Closed, blocked, or covered supply registers.
- A blocked or undersized return air grille.
- A dirty evaporator coil sitting above the furnace, which is a frequent hidden restriction.
- Undersized, crushed, disconnected, or leaking ductwork.
- A dirty blower wheel, which cannot move its rated air even at full speed.
- Too many rooms closed off, reducing the system's available return path.
- A duct damper closed or a zone system fault.
How to diagnose it
- Check the air filter and note its type as well as its condition. A very high MERV filter on a system designed for a basic one restricts airflow permanently rather than gradually.
- Walk the house and count closed or blocked registers, and check the return grille.
- Note whether the fault appeared after closing off rooms, changing filter type, or having ductwork altered.
- Note whether it happens in cooling as well as heating. Cooling calls for more airflow, so a marginal system shows it there first.
- Check flexible duct runs where visible for crushing or sharp bends.
How to fix it
- Replace the filter with the correct size and type, and check it monthly during the heating season.
- Open all supply registers and clear the return grille. Closing registers to save money reduces airflow the furnace depends on and is a common cause.
- Evaporator coil cleaning, blower wheel cleaning, and duct repair are technician work.
- If the duct system is genuinely inadequate, have it corrected rather than adjusting settings to make the code go away. The restriction is real whether or not it is being reported.
- Act on this code even though the furnace is still heating. It is warning about the condition that damages heat exchangers.
Notes
Closing registers in unused rooms feels like an obvious saving and is one of the more common causes of this code. A forced air system needs its designed airflow through the furnace regardless of which rooms want heat, and restricting it moves the problem to the heat exchanger.

What not to do: ignore it because the house is still warm. b9 is deliberately early information; the furnace is telling you about the overheating it has not done yet, and the entire point of the code is to be acted on at the cheap end of the timeline.
