Goodman furnace E7: Igniter fault or improper grounding
E7 names two quite different faults in one code: a problem with the igniter circuit, or inadequate furnace grounding. Goodman's own service bulletin on the equivalent flash code reports that grounding is the more common of the two in the field.
Applies to: Goodman GMVC96, GMVM97, GCVC96, GCVM97 and Amana AMVC96, AMVM97 series gas furnaces with a two-character alphanumeric display. Older single-LED boards report the equivalent condition as eight flashes.
What it means
The literal meaning of E7 is a fault in the igniter circuit — a shorted hot surface igniter, or a failed igniter relay on the board. What makes it worth reading carefully is that Goodman explicitly pairs it with grounding in the code's own description, and its service bulletin on the corresponding eight-flash code goes further: field reports linked that code most often to an open or insufficient ground at the furnace rather than to the igniter at all. That inverts the obvious response. Read literally, E7 sends you to buy an igniter; the manufacturer's guidance is to check every ground connection first and treat the igniter as the second move.
Most common causes
- An open or insufficient furnace ground. Goodman identifies this as the most commonly reported cause of the equivalent code.
- A loose blower motor ground connection.
- A loose low voltage common ground.
- A genuinely shorted hot surface igniter.
- A failed igniter relay on the control board.
- Damaged igniter wiring shorting to the cabinet.
How to diagnose it
- Note whether the igniter glows at all during a start attempt, if the furnace has a sight glass. An igniter that never glows and one that glows normally point to different halves of this code.
- Mention any recent electrical work, control board replacement, or blower motor replacement to the technician. Each disturbs a ground connection this fault depends on.
- Note whether other intermittent faults have appeared alongside it — poor grounding produces several at once, and a cluster is itself a clue.
How to fix it
- The published remedy for the equivalent flash code is to check and tighten every ground wire connection to the furnace chassis, with particular attention to the blower motor ground and the low voltage common ground.
- After grounds are secured, power the furnace off for about ten seconds and back on to clear stored codes.
- If the code returns once grounding is confirmed good, the igniter is replaced.
- This is inside-the-cabinet work on the ignition circuit and belongs to a technician. What a homeowner can usefully do is report the code and mention that Goodman associates it with grounding, which can save an unnecessary igniter.

Ask for the ground check before any part goes in — it is quick, and the field data above justifies the request. Offer the electrical history of the house, because a furnace that developed E7 after panel work, an outlet swap, or any rewiring has probably named its own cause. And if E7 keeps company with other codes — weak flame signal, polarity complaints — say so: those clusters usually share the single electrical root the bulletin describes, and fixing it clears the lot.
