Goodman furnace b3: Blower motor operating at a power, temperature, or speed limit
b3 means the blower motor has reached one of its own internal limits and is holding back to protect itself. The motor is working correctly — it is the conditions around it that are wrong.
Applies to: Goodman GMVC96, GMVM97, GCVC96, GCVM97 and Amana AMVC96, AMVM97 series gas furnaces with a variable-speed ECM blower motor and a two-character display.
What it means
A variable-speed motor monitors its own power draw, temperature, and speed, and will reduce output rather than damage itself. b3 means one of those limits has been reached. The important reading is that the motor is not faulty: it is telling you it cannot deliver what was asked without exceeding a safe boundary. For a blower, that almost always means it is working against too much resistance — a restricted duct system makes a motor draw more power to move less air, which is precisely the condition that drives it into a power or temperature limit. So the fault usually lives in the ductwork or the filter rather than in the furnace.
Most common causes
- A restrictive or undersized duct system, so the motor cannot reach its commanded airflow within its power limit.
- A clogged air filter, or a filter far more restrictive than the system was designed for.
- Closed or blocked supply registers, or a blocked return grille.
- A dirty blower wheel, which increases the work needed for the same airflow.
- A dirty evaporator coil above the furnace, which is a common hidden restriction.
- High ambient temperature around the motor.
- Airflow settings configured higher than the duct system can support.
How to diagnose it
- Check the air filter first, and check what type it is. A high-restriction filter fitted to a system designed for a basic one causes this reliably.
- Walk the house and count closed or blocked registers, and check the return grille is clear.
- Note whether the code appears mainly in cooling, mainly in heating, or both. Cooling calls for more airflow, so a marginal duct system often shows the fault there first.
- Note when it started. Following a new filter type, a duct alteration, or a room closed off, the cause is usually that change.
How to fix it
- Fit the correct filter for the system and replace it regularly. This resolves a meaningful share of b3 faults on its own.
- Open registers and clear the return grille.
- Blower wheel cleaning, evaporator coil cleaning, duct modification, and airflow reconfiguration are technician work.
- If the duct system is genuinely undersized, correcting it is the real fix. Reducing the airflow setting to stop the code hides a limitation rather than removing it.
- Do not ignore this because the furnace still heats. A motor repeatedly running at its thermal limit has a shorter life than one that is not.
Notes
This code is a good early indicator of duct and filter problems that would otherwise go unnoticed for years. A conventional blower in the same situation simply moves less air quietly; a variable-speed motor reports it.
