Goodman furnace d0: Data not yet on network
d0 means the furnace is part of a communicating system and has not yet received the configuration it needs from the network. On a new installation this is normal for a short period.
Applies to: Goodman GMVC96, GMVM97, GCVC96, GCVM97 and Amana AMVC96, AMVM97 series communicating gas furnaces with a two-character display.
What it means
A communicating system links the thermostat, furnace, and outdoor unit over a data connection, and components exchange configuration when they come online. d0 means the furnace is waiting for data it has not received yet. Immediately after power-up, a new installation, or a component replacement, this is expected and clears on its own within a few minutes as the system negotiates. It becomes a fault when it does not clear — at which point the furnace is isolated from the system it is meant to be part of, and the cause is in the communication wiring or in one of the other components.
Most common causes
- Normal start-up after power-up or a new installation, clearing on its own.
- A communication wire disconnected, broken, or wired to the wrong terminal.
- A thermostat that is not powered, not communicating, or not compatible.
- An outdoor unit that has not come online.
- Reversed communication wires between components.
- Electrical noise on the communication line, sometimes from running it alongside high voltage wiring.
- A component in the system that has failed and is not responding.
How to diagnose it
- Wait several minutes if the system has just been powered up or installed. This resolves the normal case.
- Check whether the thermostat display is working and showing the system as connected.
- Note whether the fault followed an installation, a component replacement, or a power cut.
- Note whether the outdoor unit is powered — its breaker being off will hold the network incomplete.
- Note whether any part of the communication wiring is visible and obviously damaged.
How to fix it
- Give the system time to negotiate before treating this as a fault, particularly after a power interruption.
- Check that the outdoor unit's disconnect and breaker are on, which is a reasonable homeowner check and a common answer.
- Communication wiring faults are technician work — they involve identifying which of several components is not responding.
- If the system was recently installed, call the installer. Communication wiring errors at installation are common and are their responsibility.
- Do not attempt to convert a communicating system to conventional wiring to get heat. The components expect the network.
Notes
Communicating systems are more capable than conventional ones and have a failure mode conventional systems do not: a wiring fault can leave every component healthy and the system inoperable. That is worth knowing before it happens at an inconvenient moment.

What the fix costs
On a new installation, d0 should cost you nothing even when it needs work: a communicating furnace that never receives its network configuration was not fully commissioned, and completing that is part of the install you already paid for — call the installer, not a new company. On an established system that suddenly shows d0, the network between furnace, thermostat, and outdoor unit is the suspect, reached through a $75–150 diagnostic (repair cost guide). The expensive tail is rare: only if hardware genuinely failed does this reach board money, $400–900 installed, and these communicating models price at the OEM end.

The homeowner version of patience applies: on day one of a new system, d0 for a short period is the furnace waiting for its configuration, not a defect. What is safely yours is establishing the timeline — new install, recent thermostat change, or out of nowhere — because each points somewhere different. What is not yours is the communicating bus: reterminating or swapping the low-voltage network wires to see what happens can misconfigure equipment that then runs wrongly rather than not at all, which is the worse outcome on a gas appliance. If d0 persists past commissioning or appears unprompted, book the visit.
