Goodman furnace C1: Low stage compressor, cooling mode
C1 means the air conditioner is running on low stage and the furnace blower is moving the air. It is normal cooling operation, displayed on the furnace because the furnace owns the blower.
Applies to: Goodman GMVC96, GMVM97, GCVC96, GCVM97 and Amana AMVC96, AMVM97 series gas furnaces with a two-character alphanumeric display, installed with a two-stage air conditioner or heat pump.
What it means
In a conventional split system the furnace contains the blower that moves air for both heating and cooling, so cooling states appear on the furnace display. C1 means the outdoor unit is running on low stage cooling. This surprises people who expect an air conditioning indication to appear at the outdoor unit or the thermostat, and it is worth documenting for exactly that reason — someone checking their furnace in summer and finding a code on the display may reasonably assume the furnace has developed a fault out of season.
Most common causes
- The thermostat is calling for cooling and the outdoor unit is running on low stage. This is normal.
- Mild cooling conditions where low stage meets demand.
- The system staging correctly rather than defaulting to full output.
How to diagnose it
- Recognise that this is a cooling status rather than a furnace fault.
- Note whether the house is cooling as expected.
- Note whether the system steps up to high stage in hotter conditions, which confirms staging works.
- Check the air filter, since restricted airflow affects cooling as much as heating and can freeze the indoor coil.
How to fix it
- Nothing to fix. This is normal cooling operation.
- Check and replace the air filter regularly through the cooling season as well as the heating season.
- If the house is not cooling adequately, check registers and the return grille before assuming an equipment fault.
- If the system never reaches high stage in hot weather, mention it at the next service.
Notes
The furnace owning the blower is why heating equipment reports cooling states, and why a cooling problem is sometimes a furnace problem. An indoor coil that freezes because of poor airflow is a blower and filter issue rather than a refrigerant one.
