Goodman furnace b1: Blower communication error
b1 means the control board and the blower motor have lost their conversation. The motor may be perfectly healthy — the control simply cannot talk to it.
Applies to: Goodman GMVC96, GMVM97, GCVC96, GCVM97 and Amana AMVC96, AMVM97 series gas furnaces with a variable-speed ECM blower motor and a two-character display.
What it means
A variable-speed blower is not switched on and off like an older motor. The control sends it instructions over a communication link and reads status back, which is what allows the furnace to run the blower at genuinely different speeds for heating, cooling, and continuous fan. b1 means that link has failed. The distinction from b0 matters: b0 says the motor is not turning, while b1 says the control does not know what the motor is doing. The motor might be running fine. Because the control cannot verify it, and because firing a furnace without confirmed airflow is unsafe, it stops anyway.
Most common causes
- A loose, damaged, or corroded communication harness between the board and the motor.
- A connector not fully seated, often after other service work in the blower compartment.
- A failed motor control module.
- A failed control board.
- Electrical noise interfering with the communication link, sometimes traceable to poor grounding.
- Rodent damage to the harness.
- A mismatched replacement motor or board that does not communicate correctly with the other.
How to diagnose it
- Note whether the furnace was recently serviced or had parts replaced. A connector disturbed during other work is the most common trigger.
- Note whether the fault is intermittent or constant. Intermittent almost always means a connection rather than a failed component.
- Note whether other faults have appeared alongside it — grounding problems produce communication errors and several other codes together.
- Mention any recent motor or board replacement to the technician, since a mismatched part is a real cause and quickly checked.
How to fix it
- This is technician work. The communication harness runs into the blower compartment alongside high voltage wiring.
- Ask the technician to check and reseat connectors before replacing components. A communication error caused by a connector is common and inexpensive; a replaced motor that did not need replacing is neither.
- Have grounding checked if the fault is intermittent and connectors look sound.
- If a motor or board was recently fitted, confirm the parts are correctly matched for the model.
Notes
The useful thing to know about b1 is that it does not mean the motor has failed. Going into the repair aware that a connector is the more likely cause makes it more likely the cheaper fix gets tried first.
