Goodman furnace IF: Internal control fault
IF means the control has found a fault within itself rather than in the furnace. It is one of the few codes on these furnaces that points at the board rather than at a component.
Applies to: Goodman GMVM97 and GCVM97 modulating gas furnaces with a two-character alphanumeric display.
What it means
Most codes on a modulating furnace report something the control has observed elsewhere — a switch, a motor, a sensor. IF is the control reporting on its own operation. Because a modulating furnace's control is doing considerably more than an older one — managing a variable firing rate, a variable speed inducer, and a variable speed blower in coordination — there is more of it to fail. The practical consequence is the same as any internal control fault: the board cannot be trusted to manage a gas appliance in its current state, so it stops.
Most common causes
- An internal control board fault.
- A microprocessor or internal check failure.
- Electrical damage to the control from a surge.
- Water damage to the control board.
- A control approaching the end of its service life.
- A transient condition triggered by a supply disturbance.
How to diagnose it
- Note whether there was a recent power surge, storm, or electrical event.
- Check whether the furnace or its surroundings have been wet.
- Note whether the code appeared once or has recurred, since a single occurrence may be transient.
- Record the date each time it appears — increasing frequency indicates a board approaching failure.
How to fix it
- Try one power reset — off at the service switch for about thirty seconds, then on. A transient condition may clear.
- If the code returns, the control board needs a technician.
- If the furnace has been wet, do not power it up. Have it inspected first.
- If a surge is suspected, consider whether surge protection is worth fitting, since replacing a board without addressing the cause invites a repeat.
Notes
Modulating furnaces are more capable and more complex than single-stage ones, and their controls carry correspondingly more responsibility. That is a genuine trade-off rather than a defect, but it does mean control faults matter more than on a simpler furnace.
