Goodman furnace On: Normal operation
On means the furnace is operating normally with no fault. If the house is cold and the display reads On, the furnace has not been asked to heat.
Applies to: Goodman GMVC96, GMVM97, GCVC96, GCVM97 and Amana AMVC96, AMVM97 series gas furnaces with a two-character alphanumeric display.
What it means
On is the display's way of saying everything is satisfied and nothing is wrong. That is useful when the house is cold, because it narrows the problem considerably: the furnace has power, its safety circuits are closed, and it has no stored fault. What it usually means in that situation is that no call for heat has arrived. The call comes from the thermostat over the low voltage wiring, so a cold house and a display reading On points at the thermostat, its wiring, or its power rather than at the furnace.
Most common causes
- The furnace is operating normally and there is no problem.
- The thermostat is not calling for heat — set to cool, set to off, or set below room temperature.
- The thermostat's batteries are flat.
- A break in the low voltage wiring between the thermostat and the furnace.
- A thermostat that has failed or lost its programming.
- A thermostat wired incorrectly after replacement.
- A zone control board not passing the call through.
How to diagnose it
- Check the thermostat is set to heat and above the current room temperature.
- Replace the thermostat batteries if it takes them, even if the display looks normal.
- Note whether the thermostat shows a call-for-heat indicator.
- Check whether the blower runs on the fan-on setting — fan working and heat not points at the heat wire.
- Note whether the fault followed a thermostat replacement, since miswiring produces exactly this.
How to fix it
- Correct the thermostat setting or replace its batteries.
- If a thermostat was recently changed, have the wiring checked against the furnace's terminals.
- Low voltage wiring faults and zone control problems are technician work.
- If the furnace is heating normally, nothing needs doing.

On sits at the harmless end of a spectrum that is not harmless everywhere. Goodman's own older single-LED boards report the same all-clear as a steadily lit light — covered at continuous on. But an identical-looking signal cannot be assumed safe across brands: on Trane's S9V2 furnaces, a continuously lit indicator is the code for a failed integrated furnace control — a replace-the-board fault (Trane continuous on). What the fix costs
Usually nothing, because On is not a fault. DIY or call a pro?
This is the rare code where DIY comes first. Checking the thermostat mode, raising the setpoint, and swapping thermostat batteries are all safe, and they resolve most cold-house-reading-On calls without a visit. The stopping point is wiring: tracing a broken low-voltage run, correcting a miswired replacement thermostat, or diagnosing a zone board means working against the furnace's terminal diagram, and a slip there can short the 24 volt circuit and blow the fuse that impersonates a dead control board. If settings and batteries have not fixed it, hand it over.
