Goodman furnace solid red: Internal control fault, gas valve error, microprocessor or frequency check failure
A steady red light covers several internal control faults: an internal error, a gas valve error, a microprocessor fault, or a failed frequency check. All of them mean the control cannot trust itself.

What it means
Goodman groups four internal conditions under a steady red indication. Each means the control has found a problem within its own operation rather than in the furnace's mechanical parts — an internal error, a fault in its gas valve circuitry, a microprocessor problem, or a failed frequency check on the incoming supply. That last one is worth noting: a frequency check failure can point at the electrical supply rather than the board, particularly on generator power. What they share is that the control has decided it cannot safely manage a gas appliance in its current state, so it stops.
Most common causes
- An internal control board fault.
- A gas valve circuit error detected by the control.
- A microprocessor fault on the board.
- A failed frequency check, which can indicate an unstable or non-standard supply rather than a board fault.
- Operating from a generator with poor frequency regulation.
- A power surge or electrical event damaging the board.
- Water damage to the control board.
How to diagnose it
- Confirm the light is steady rather than flashing, since counted red flashes are individual faults with individual meanings.
- Note whether the furnace has been running on generator power, which can produce the frequency check failure.
- Note whether there was a recent power surge, storm, or electrical event.
- Check whether the furnace or its surroundings have been wet.
How to fix it
- Try one power reset — off at the service switch for about thirty seconds, then on. A transient condition may clear.
- If the indication returns, the control board needs a technician. Two of the four grouped causes involve the gas valve circuit.
- If the furnace has been running on a generator, mention it. A frequency problem is a supply issue and replacing the board will not fix it.
- If the furnace has been wet, do not power it up. Have it inspected before any attempt to restart.
Notes
The frequency check being grouped here is worth remembering. A furnace that works normally on mains power and shows a steady red on a generator is reporting the generator, not itself.
