Goodman furnace 2 amber flashes: Normal operation — second stage heat
Two amber flashes means the furnace is running normally on second stage heat, at full firing rate. It is a status indication, not a fault.
Applies to: Goodman GMEC96 and Amana AMEC96 two-stage gas furnaces with a three-colour diagnostic LED.
What it means
A two-stage furnace has a low fire and a high fire. The control shows one amber flash while running on first stage, and two while running on second stage, which is full output. Seeing two amber flashes on a cold morning is the furnace doing exactly what it is designed to do — the thermostat has called for second stage heat, either because the house is well below setpoint or because first stage has run long enough without satisfying it. The reason this is worth a page is that the flash count alone is ambiguous to anyone who does not know the colour matters. Two red flashes on this same board is a pressure switch stuck closed, which is a genuine fault. Two amber flashes is nothing at all. The count is identical; only the colour separates a furnace that is working from one that is not.
Most common causes
- The thermostat is calling for second stage heat (W2), which is the normal reason.
- A large temperature difference between the room and the setpoint, so the furnace goes to high fire.
- Recovery from a setback schedule, when the furnace is bringing the house up quickly.
- Cold outdoor conditions, where first stage alone cannot keep up.
How to diagnose it
- Confirm the flashes are amber and not red. On this board colour is the difference between a status indication and a fault.
- Note whether the house is actually heating. If it is, there is nothing to diagnose.
- If the furnace sits on second stage constantly in mild weather, that is worth mentioning to a technician — it can point at an oversized or undersized system, or a staging setting — but it is not a fault code.
- One amber flash instead means first stage heat, and is equally normal.
How to fix it
- Nothing. This is the furnace reporting normal high-fire operation.
- If the furnace is not producing heat while showing this, the problem is not in the code — have the equipment looked at.
- Do not reset the furnace or cut power to clear this. There is nothing to clear.
Notes
The three-colour LED on this board is genuinely more informative than a single red LED, but it depends on the reader noticing colour. Many people count flashes and stop there, which turns a normal operating indication into an imagined fault.
