Trane furnace E04: Open limit — thermal, rollout, or reverse airflow switch
E04 covers three different switches in one code: the main thermal limit, the flame rollout switches, and the reverse airflow switch. They are wired in one string, and the code does not say which opened.
Applies to: Trane and American Standard S9V2 two-stage condensing variable speed gas furnaces with a seven-segment integrated furnace control display, per Installer's Guide 18-CE01D1-1E-EN.
What it means
Trane proves this whole string at once. In the sequence of operation the control sends 24 volts out the HLO terminal through the rollout switches, the main thermal limit and any reverse airflow switch, and watches for it at the HLI input. If it does not arrive, one of them is open, and the control cannot tell which. That matters enormously for how seriously to take this code, because the three switches mean very different things. A main thermal limit open is an overheat, usually a dirty filter. A rollout switch open means flame or hot gas came forward out of the burner box, which is the condition most associated with carbon monoxide entering the house. A reverse airflow switch open means air is moving the wrong way through the furnace. Until a technician determines which switch is open, this code has to be treated as the most serious of the three.
Most common causes
- A dirty air filter or blocked registers, overheating the furnace and opening the main thermal limit.
- A blocked flue or heat exchanger causing flame rollout.
- A failed inducer, so combustion gas is not being drawn out.
- A cracked heat exchanger.
- Reverse airflow through the furnace, which the dedicated switch detects.
- A failed switch, or a break in the wiring between them.
How to diagnose it
- Check the air filter. If it is dirty, replace it — that is the benign end of this code and it is homeowner work.
- Do not repeatedly reset the furnace to keep the heat on. If a rollout switch is the one that opened, that is exactly the wrong response.
- Confirm there is a working carbon monoxide alarm on every level of the home, including the level the furnace is on.
- Determining which switch opened requires opening the cabinet and is technician work.
How to fix it
- Replacing a dirty filter is worth doing first and may be the whole repair.
- If it recurs, stop and get a technician. The code cannot distinguish an overheat from a rollout, and one of those is dangerous.
- Rollout switches are manual reset by design. A technician finding one tripped should establish why before resetting it.
- Do not have any switch in this string replaced without establishing what opened it.
Notes
This is the clearest example on the site of a code that is ambiguous by design. Trane gains a simpler control by proving the whole string at once, and the cost is that the diagnosis has to happen at the furnace.

What the fix costs
The benign end of this code is free — a filter. The paid end starts at the repair guide's limit switch line, $150–350, which carries the page's own warning: the money is in finding why it tripped, not in the part. A rollout switch that opened is the expensive-to-ignore version; what it can indicate, a compromised heat exchanger, is the $1,000–2,500+ repair the guide calls the usual replace-the-furnace moment. Which of the three switches opened decides which of those bills applies, and that determination is what the visit is for.
DIY or call a pro
This code has a one-item homeowner list: the filter. Replace it if it is dirty, restore any closed registers, and see whether the fault recurs — that resolves the overheating version of E04 and costs nothing. The stopping rule is absolute, though, because the same code covers a tripped rollout switch, and rollout is evidence that flame or hot gas left the burner box. You cannot tell which switch opened from outside the cabinet, so treat any recurrence as the serious version: no repeated resets, working CO alarms confirmed, technician called. Rollout switches latch by design; resetting one without establishing why it tripped defeats the point of it.
The same fault on other brands

Equivalents include Goodman E3, four red on York UTEC boards, and Lennox E250. The closest structural match is Carrier 33, which folds its rollout switches into the same circuit exactly as E04 does — the same ambiguity, and the same reason to take the code seriously until the open switch is identified.
