Carrier furnace Status code 45: Control circuitry lockout
Code 45 means the control has found a fault in itself and locked out for one hour. Carrier's instruction is to reset power to clear it and replace the control if the code repeats.
Applies to: Carrier 58MCB four-way multipoise condensing gas furnaces and related models using the same integrated furnace control. Bryant and Payne furnaces of the same generation use the same control and code set.
What it means
This code reports a fault the control has detected in its own circuitry rather than in the furnace. Carrier lists three causes: a gas valve relay stuck open, a flame sense circuit failure, and a software check error. All three mean the control can no longer trust its own ability to manage the gas safely, so it locks out for an hour. Carrier's documented remedy is unusually direct — reset power to clear the lockout, and replace the control if the code returns. That is effectively a one-strike test: a single occurrence may be transient, a repeat means the board.

- Electrical noise or a supply disturbance producing a transient fault.
- A failing control board approaching the end of its life.
How to diagnose it
- Note whether this is the first occurrence or a repeat. Carrier's guidance turns on exactly that distinction.
- Note whether it followed a power disturbance, a surge, or a storm, which can produce a one-off.
- Note the one-hour pattern if the furnace restarts by itself after that interval.
- Record the date each time it appears. A code that recurs at increasing frequency is a board approaching failure.
How to fix it
- Carrier's documented remedy is to reset power to clear the lockout. Switching the furnace off at its service switch for about thirty seconds and back on does this.
- If the code repeats, the control is replaced. That is the manufacturer's own instruction, not a judgement call.
- Control board replacement is technician work.
- Do not keep resetting a board that returns this code. Two of its three documented causes involve the gas valve and flame sensing circuits.
Notes
Carrier giving an explicit replace-if-it-repeats instruction is useful, because control boards are otherwise one of the harder furnace components to condemn confidently. Here the manufacturer has already made the call.
