Carrier furnace Status code 45: Control circuitry lockout
Code 45 means the control has found a fault in itself and locked out for one hour. Carrier's instruction is to reset power to clear it and replace the control if the code repeats.
Applies to: Carrier 58MCB four-way multipoise condensing gas furnaces and related models using the same integrated furnace control. Bryant and Payne furnaces of the same generation use the same control and code set.
What it means
This code reports a fault the control has detected in its own circuitry rather than in the furnace. Carrier lists three causes: a gas valve relay stuck open, a flame sense circuit failure, and a software check error. All three mean the control can no longer trust its own ability to manage the gas safely, so it locks out for an hour. Carrier's documented remedy is unusually direct — reset power to clear the lockout, and replace the control if the code returns. That is effectively a one-strike test: a single occurrence may be transient, a repeat means the board.

The boundary is the word once. If 45 comes back, the instruction is to replace the control, and the reason to obey it rather than keep resetting is what this code alleges: two of its three documented causes are the gas valve relay and the flame-sensing circuitry — the two functions a furnace control must never be wrong about. Board replacement itself is technician work; the board carries the furnace's safety logic, and the wiring transfer and configuration have to be exactly right.
