Furnace won't turn on at all: a 5-minute checklist before you call

No sound, no fan, no clicks. Five checks, cheapest first — about half of no-start calls end at step 2.

Thermostat

Heat mode, setpoint 5 degrees above room temperature, fresh batteries if it takes them. Blank screen = dead batteries or no 24V power from the furnace.

The furnace switch

Every furnace has a light-switch-style shutoff on or beside it, and they get flipped by accident — painters, kids, laundry baskets. It looks exactly like a light switch. Check it.

The breaker

Even gas furnaces need electricity. Find the breaker labeled furnace/air handler; if tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, stop — that is an electrical fault, not a nuisance.

The furnace door

The blower door has a safety switch; a door that was re-hung slightly off after a filter change keeps the whole unit dead. Push the door firmly into place.

Gas supply

The handle on the gas line to the furnace should be parallel to the pipe. If other gas appliances in the house are also dead, the problem is upstream — call the utility.

Safety line: Reset a tripped breaker exactly once. A breaker that re-trips is doing its job — repeated resets on a shorted blower motor or board is how electrical fires start. That is a same-day technician call.

Is the furnace flashing a light?

If the burners will not light, the control board is almost certainly flashing a diagnostic code behind the little window. Count the flashes and look the code up by brand here — walking into the phone call knowing the code saves diagnostic time.
