Trane furnace E6.1: Line voltage polarity reversed
E6.1 means line and neutral are swapped in the supply to the furnace. It is one of the two codes that explain a furnace which lights perfectly and still fails to prove flame.
Applies to: Trane and American Standard S9V2 two-stage condensing variable speed gas furnaces with a seven-segment integrated furnace control display, per Installer's Guide 18-CE01D1-1E-EN.
What it means
Flame rectification pushes a few microamps from the flame through the burner and the chassis back to neutral, so the polarity of the incoming supply is part of the sensing circuit rather than incidental to it. With line and neutral swapped, the furnace lights, the flame is genuinely there, and the control reads nothing — so it shuts the gas off within seconds. Every component in the ignition system tests fine, which is exactly why this fault costs people money in unnecessary parts. Trane giving it a dedicated code, separate from any igniter or flame sensor fault, turns a difficult diagnosis into a reading off a display.
Most common causes
- Line and neutral swapped at the receptacle or junction box feeding the furnace.
- A miswired branch circuit at the panel.
- A replacement disconnect switch wired incorrectly.
- Circuit work done without checking polarity.
- An installation that has been wrong since day one, which is common where the furnace has always had ignition complaints.
How to diagnose it
- Note whether the furnace has ever run reliably. A furnace wrong from installation usually has a long history of ignition complaints.
- Note any recent electrical work — a new disconnect, a panel change, a moved circuit.
- Check the Last 6 Faults menu for E2.1 or E2.2 stored alongside this, which is the pattern.
- Confirming polarity means measuring live line voltage and is technician or electrician work.
How to fix it
- Reverse the line power wiring. In most places this is licensed electrical work.
- Do not have flame sensors or igniters replaced while this code is stored. They are not the fault.
- If parts have already been replaced without fixing the problem, this code is very likely the explanation.
Notes
Goodman, Trane and York all pair reversed polarity with an igniter fault on their flash code systems. On this seven-segment control Trane separates them, which is a real improvement.

What the fix costs
The fix is re-landing two conductors, so the bill is the visit rather than a part: a diagnostic call, $75–150 per the repair guide, plus licensed electrical time if the swap is at the panel or a junction box upstream. What this code protects you from is the other bill — E6.1's entire cost story is the parts it prevents buying. A furnace failing flame-proof with reversed polarity will consume flame sensors and igniters indefinitely, $80–350 a visit, without any of them ever being the fault. Confirming polarity means live measurements at line-voltage connections, and correcting it means opening a panel, disconnect or junction box — licensed work in most places, and none of it homeowner territory. The homeowner question that actually advances E6.1 is historical: has this furnace ever run reliably? A unit wrong since installation carries a long ignition-complaint history and points at the original wiring; a furnace that ran for years points at whatever electrical work happened most recently. Knowing which, and saying so, is the fastest diagnosis available for this code.
The same fault on other brands
Reversed line polarity earns its own code on most modern controls — the grounding and polarity hub collects the set. Direct equivalents include Goodman EA and Lennox E111, both naming the same swapped line and neutral. Trane's flash-code furnaces bundle it with poor grounding into six flashes; the seven-segment control splitting polarity (E6.1) from ground (E6.2) is what makes this the easier version to diagnose.
