Furnace won't turn on after summer: the first-cold-day checklist
A furnace that sat idle since spring fails in predictable ways, and almost all of them are cheaper to find on a mild afternoon than on the first freezing night.
Test it before the season needs it
Pick a mild morning, set the thermostat to heat, raise the setpoint five degrees, and let the furnace run a complete cycle: inducer, ignition, a few minutes of warm air, normal shutdown. Every problem below is easier and cheaper to deal with in the afternoon sunshine than during the first hard freeze, when every service company's phone is ringing and after-hours rates apply.
The smell on first start is usually normal
A summer of dust settles on the heat exchanger and burns off during the first heat cycle. It smells like scorched dust, fades the same day, and needs no action. A smell that persists into a second day, or that reads electrical or plastic rather than dusty, is a different animal — the smells page sorts the normal one from the emergencies.
The mode, the switch, and the door
Three free causes come first. The thermostat may still be set to cool — heat mode, setpoint above room temperature. The furnace disconnect switch, which looks exactly like a light switch, gets flipped during a summer of basement and attic projects; check it. And if the filter was changed in spring, the blower door may be sitting slightly proud of its latch — the door switch silently kills everything until the door is pushed firmly home.
The condensate trap sat all summer
On a condensing furnace — the kind with white PVC pipes — the condensate trap and drain hose can clog with algae while the furnace sits. A blocked condensate path keeps the pressure switch from proving draft, and the control will refuse to open the gas valve until it does. Walk outside and look at the pipes
Those same PVC furnaces breathe through two terminations on an outside wall. Winter blocks them with snow; summer blocks them with leaves, plant growth, and the occasional nest. Anything in either pipe trips the same pressure-switch protection as a blocked drain. Clear both openings by hand.
Parts that aged out over the off-season
Hot surface igniters wear out on a clock — three to seven heating seasons is a normal life — and a flame sensor that was marginal in March is still marginal now. Neither heals over summer; the first start of the season is simply when last winter's borderline parts finally miss. This is why the weak-flame warning codes exist: they flag the marginal sensor before it becomes a no-heat.
The codes a summer of sitting produces
If the test run ends in a blinking light, these are the usual first-cold-day suspects — the blocked-draft family and the failed-ignition family:

A pressure-switch code after the summer points back at the trap and the pipes above. An ignition lockout points at the igniter, flame sensor, or gas supply — count the flashes and look your exact code up by brand before you call.
Fix it yourself, or call?
Homeowner territory is everything above: switching the mode, checking the disconnect and breaker (one reset only), reseating the door, a fresh filter, flushing the trap, clearing both terminations, and one 60-second power cycle. All free, all reversible.
Call a technician for any lockout that survives those checks. A lockout code means gas was delivered to burners that did not light it, and the parts that decide the outcome — igniter, flame sensor, gas pressure, gas valve — are technician work on a combustion appliance. Repeatedly power-cycling to force more ignition attempts is the one move this site always argues against.
What the first-of-season call costs
From the repair cost guide: a diagnostic visit is $75–150 and usually credited against the repair, and flame sensor cleaning — the most common first-start fix — is $80–200. A hot surface igniter runs $150–350 installed on a standard visit, but $250–500 as an after-hours emergency per the igniter cost page — which is the entire argument for the October test run instead of the November midnight discovery.
Is the furnace flashing a light?
If the burners will not light, the control board is almost certainly flashing a diagnostic code behind the little window. Count the flashes and look the code up by brand here — walking into the phone call knowing the code saves diagnostic time.
