Furnace making a loud noise: what each sound means

Furnace noises are unusually diagnostic — the sound narrows the fault before anyone opens the cabinet.

Boom or whump at ignition

Delayed ignition: gas accumulates before lighting and ignites with a small explosion. Usually dirty burners or weak igniter. Stop using the furnace and book a technician — repeated booms crack heat exchangers.

High-pitched squeal

Blower belt (older units) or a motor bearing running dry. A belt is a cheap part; a bearing squeal that has gone on for weeks often ends as a full motor replacement.

Metal-on-metal scraping

Blower wheel has come loose and is cutting into its housing. Shut the furnace off at the switch now — running it grinds the wheel to scrap — and call.

Rapid clicking

The igniter sparking without lighting: gas valve, flame sensor, or ignition fault. The board usually stores a code; look it up here.

Rumble after the burners shut off

Afterburn from dirty burners or a failing gas valve letting fuel through. Technician visit; mention the timing — after shutdown is the important detail.

Rattle or vibration hum

Loose panel screws or ductwork drumming. Press on the cabinet panels while it runs; if the noise changes, tighten screws and add foam tape. The only harmless entry on this list.

Safety line: Booms and scraping are the two stop-now sounds. Everything else can wait a few days; those two get worse every single cycle.

Is the furnace flashing a light?

If the burners will not light, the control board is almost certainly flashing a diagnostic code behind the little window. Count the flashes and look the code up by brand here — walking into the phone call knowing the code saves diagnostic time.
