Lennox furnace Alert code 294: Inducer motor overcurrent — Watchguard
Alert 294 means the furnace inducer motor is drawing more current than it should. The system goes into Watchguard mode and clears itself once the current reads normal again.

What it means
The inducer pulls combustion air through the burners and pushes flue gas out of the vent. A motor drawing excess current is a motor working harder than it was designed to, and on an inducer that usually means mechanical drag rather than an electrical fault — worn bearings, or a wheel fighting a restriction. Lennox's troubleshooting reflects that, naming bearings, wiring and amps together. What makes this alert worth having is that it catches a failing inducer before it fails outright. An inducer that seizes in January is a furnace that will not run at all; one reporting overcurrent is still working and is telling you it will not be for long.
Most common causes
- Worn or failing inducer motor bearings.
- A restriction in the vent or intake making the inducer work against more resistance than designed.
- Debris in the inducer housing or on the wheel.
- Damaged or degraded wiring to the inducer raising the current draw.
- A motor at the end of its service life.
How to diagnose it
- Note whether the inducer has become noisy, since bearing wear is usually audible before it is measurable.
- Check the vent and intake terminations outside for blockage, which is the one item here that is homeowner work.
- Note whether the alert clears on its own and comes back, which is the pattern of a motor that is failing rather than failed.
- Leave current measurement to a technician.
How to fix it
- Clear any blockage at the vent or intake termination.
- Everything else is technician work: Lennox specifies checking combustion blower bearings, wiring and amps.
- Expect the inducer to be replaced if it does not meet performance standards. Lennox does not offer a repair path for the motor itself.
- Treat a recurring version of this alert as a scheduled replacement rather than waiting for the failure.
Notes
The alert clears automatically once inducer current is sensed to be in range after an ignition, either following Watchguard or a unit reset. That self-clearing means a furnace can run all season with an intermittent 294 in its history, which is exactly the case worth acting on before winter.
