Lennox furnace Alert code 292: Indoor blower motor will not start — Watchguard
Alert 292 means the indoor blower motor was commanded to run and did not start. The system goes into Watchguard mode, because a furnace that cannot move air cannot safely make heat.
Applies to: Lennox communicating systems with a variable speed indoor blower motor, in a gas furnace or an air handler, as documented in the Lennox Residential Communicating Systems Alert Code Guide.
What it means
The indoor blower is the motor that moves conditioned air through the house, and on a communicating system the control talks to it directly and knows whether it started. When it does not, there is no point continuing: firing the burners with no airflow would overheat the heat exchanger within a minute or two. Lennox names three physical causes — a seized bearing, a stuck wheel, and obstructions — and then a replacement path covering the motor, the motor module and the wheel, because on a variable speed assembly those are separable and the failure can be in any of them.
Most common causes
- A seized motor bearing.
- A blower wheel stuck or jammed, including by debris that has fallen into the housing.
- An obstruction physically preventing the wheel from turning.
- A failed motor module, which on a variable speed motor is the electronics rather than the motor itself.
- Loss of the communication link or the power feed to the motor.
How to diagnose it
- Note whether the blower has been noisy, whether it has been running slowly, or whether it has recently made a rubbing or grinding sound.
- Note whether anything has been dropped or stored near the return, since debris drawn into the housing is a real cause.
- Do not open the blower compartment. The blower door safety switch cuts power for a reason, and a wheel that is jammed rather than seized can free itself and start turning.
- Note the alert number, since 292 and the blower communication alerts point at different parts of the same assembly.
How to fix it
- Technician work. It involves a live blower compartment and, on a variable speed motor, a module that is not interchangeable across models.
- Lennox directs technicians to Service and Application Note H-17-02, covering all communicating variable speed motors.
- Expect the motor, the module or the wheel to be replaced if the assembly does not meet performance standards, rather than all three.
- If the cause is a fallen obstruction, removing it may be the whole repair.
Notes
Lennox classifies this alert as ID, meaning indoor unit, so it applies to a communicating air handler as well as to a gas furnace. The Watchguard lockout is what stops the furnace firing into a stationary blower.

Lennox naming three separable replacements — motor, motor module, wheel — is the key to pricing this alert honestly. A wheel freed from an obstruction or replaced is the modest outcome; a module-only repair, where the motor's electronics failed but its windings are fine, trims meaningfully off the blower guide's ECM figures; a full variable-speed assembly is the top tier at $900–1,500+ installed, often brand-locked. Two guide notes to carry into the quote: ask explicitly whether the module alone can be replaced (the guide flags that brands price modules aggressively, but it is still usually cheaper than the assembly), and run the repair-or-replace math before approving the top tier on an old furnace — installing the most expensive wear part into a unit near end of life is the guide's canonical example of money pointed the wrong way.
DIY or call a pro
The furnace has already made the safety half of this decision — it refuses to fire without airflow, which is the correct and only response — so the remaining question is diagnostic, and it is not a panel-off job: the difference between a seized bearing, a stuck wheel, a dead module and a dead motor is established with power applied to a line-voltage assembly. What your ears contribute is real, though. A hum with no rotation, a squeal that had been growing for weeks before the failure, or a rhythmic scrape all narrow the field, and the growing-squeal history in particular tells the technician to look at bearings before electronics. Report what you heard and when. The one hard action item: if you ever hear metal-on-metal scraping from the blower compartment while it runs, shut the furnace off then — a loose wheel destroys its housing quickly, and that noise is the last cheap moment of this repair.
