Trane furnace E2.1: Retry exceeded — flame never sensed, one hour lockout
E2.1 means the furnace tried to light three times, never sensed flame on any attempt, and has locked out for one hour. Trane states the retry count and the lockout duration explicitly.

What it means
The published numbers are what make this code useful. Three failed attempts, then a one hour lockout — so a furnace showing E2.1 is not struggling right now, it stopped trying some time ago and is waiting out a timer. That explains the behaviour people actually report, which is a furnace that runs for one cycle and then goes quiet for about an hour before trying again. Flame never sensed on any of the three attempts is a different situation from flame sensed and lost, which Trane gives a separate code. Never sensed means either nothing lit, or the sensing circuit could not detect a flame that was there. On this control the flame current can be measured directly at two pads on the board marked FP, which settles that question quickly.
Most common causes
- No gas reaching the burners — a closed manual valve, an interrupted supply, or recent work on the gas line.
- An igniter that is failing, out of position, or not being energised.
- A gas valve not opening when commanded.
- A flame sensor so coated or mispositioned that it detects nothing.
- Reversed line polarity or a bad ground, both of which prevent flame rectification entirely and both of which Trane reports separately as E6.1 and E6.2.
How to diagnose it
- Confirm the gas supply is on, including any manual valve at the furnace and at the meter.
- Check whether other gas appliances in the house are working, which separates a furnace fault from a supply problem.
- Note whether the burners light at all before shutdown. That single observation splits this code in half.
- Use the Last 6 Faults menu to see whether E6.1 or E6.2 is also stored — if either is, fix that first.
How to fix it
- Beyond confirming the gas supply, this is technician work in the burner compartment.
- Ask for the flame current to be read at the FP pads before parts are replaced.
- Do not keep resetting the furnace to get heat. Each attempt puts unburnt gas into the heat exchanger before the trial fails.
- The lockout clears itself after one hour, so a furnace that seems to recover has not been repaired.

The observation worth making from outside is whether the burners ever light before shutdown — that single fact, reported accurately, halves the technician's search space.
