Armstrong furnace 7 flashes: Primary or secondary limit open, or Watchguard after three minutes open
Seven flashes means a primary or secondary limit switch is open, or that it stayed open longer than three minutes and the control entered Watchguard.
Applies to: Armstrong Air, AirEase, Concord, and Ducane are the four badges Allied Air Enterprises puts on the A80UH1E and 80G1UHE gas furnaces that carry this -02 integrated control.
What it means
The limit switches open when the furnace overheats. Allied Air covers both the transient case and the escalated one in a single code, distinguished by duration: a limit that is open produces the code, and a limit that stays open beyond three minutes escalates to Watchguard lockout. Almost always the cause is airflow — air is not carrying heat away from the heat exchanger fast enough. The switch is usually working correctly and reporting something true, which is why replacing it is nearly never the fix. Note that the rollout switch gets its own code on this control, so seven flashes is specifically the limit circuit rather than a combustion problem.
Most common causes
- A clogged air filter, which is by a wide margin the most common cause.
- Closed, blocked or covered supply registers, or too many closed at once.
- A blocked return air grille.
- Undersized or restrictive ductwork, or a duct that has come apart or collapsed.
- A failing blower motor, or a blower wheel packed with dust.
- Blower speed set too low for the furnace's output.
- A dirty evaporator coil above the furnace, which is a frequent hidden restriction.
How to diagnose it
- Check the air filter first. Grey, matted or opaque to light means you have very likely found it.
- Walk the house and count closed or blocked supply registers, and check the return grille.
- Note whether the blower runs at all. If the furnace fires and the blower never starts, overheating is certain.
- Note whether it only happens on long runs — heating normally at first and tripping after twenty minutes is the marginal-airflow signature.
- Note that this code is the limit circuit specifically. Rollout has its own code on this control, which is a more serious condition.
How to fix it
- Replace the air filter with the correct size and type and check it monthly during the heating season.
- Open all supply registers and clear the return grille.
- Blower motor work, blower wheel cleaning, evaporator coil cleaning, duct repair and speed changes are technician tasks.
- If the code returns after a filter change, stop resetting it and have the furnace inspected. Repeated overheating is what damages heat exchangers, and that is a carbon monoxide risk rather than a comfort issue.
Notes
Allied Air separating the limit circuit from rollout is more informative than the manufacturers that group them. If you see seven flashes and not eight, the combustion side is behaving and the problem is airflow.
