Trane furnace E11: Gas valve relay faults — five conditions in one code
E11 is a single code covering five distinct gas valve relay conditions across both firing stages. Trane lists them explicitly, and they are not equally serious.
Applies to: Trane and American Standard S9V2 two-stage condensing variable speed gas furnaces with a seven-segment integrated furnace control display, per Installer's Guide 18-CE01D1-1E-EN.
What it means
Trane groups five conditions under this one code, numbered in the guide: the first stage gas valve not energised when it should be, the first stage gas valve relay stuck closed, the second stage gas valve relay stuck closed, the second stage gas valve energised when it should not be, and the second stage gas valve not energised when it should be. Read them and a pattern appears — two of the five are failures to open, which produce no heat, and three are the valve or its relay being energised or held closed when it should not be, which is the gas safety direction. The code alone does not say which of the five occurred, so it has to be treated as the most serious of the group until a technician determines otherwise.
Most common causes
- A gas valve relay welded or stuck closed on the control board.
- A failed gas valve solenoid on either stage.
- Wiring to either valve stage damaged, shorted, or unseated.
- A control board driving the valve outputs incorrectly.
- A replacement valve or board that does not match the original configuration.
How to diagnose it
- Because three of the five conditions involve a valve being energised when it should not be, shut off the gas at the manual valve before investigating.
- If there is any smell of gas, leave the building and call the gas utility from outside.
- Check the Last 6 Faults menu for E05, E7.1 or E2.3 stored alongside — each narrows down which of the five applies.
- Nothing here is homeowner-serviceable.
How to fix it
- Shut off the gas supply, then call a licensed technician.
- Expect the relays and wiring to be checked as well as the valves, since three of the five conditions are relay faults rather than valve faults.
- Do not run the furnace while this is unresolved.

If it is one of the relay conditions, the relay lives on the integrated furnace control, and the price is the board guide's $400–900 installed.
