Heil furnace 1 flash: Not used — if you are counting one flash, count again
ICP lists one flash as not used on this control. Seeing what looks like a single flash almost always means you are watching a heartbeat, or catching the tail of a longer pattern.
Applies to: International Comfort Products *9MPT and *9MPV gas furnaces using the Honeywell SV9541Q SmartValve, sold as Heil, Tempstar and Comfortmaker.
What it means
The SmartValve's code table has no meaning assigned to a single flash. That is genuinely useful information rather than a gap, because it tells you that a one-flash reading is a misread rather than a fault. There are two common ways to get one. A heartbeat pulses continuously and, glimpsed briefly, can look like a single blink. And every longer code ends with a pause before repeating, so joining a pattern partway through and seeing one flash before the pause is easy. Both are solved the same way: watch several full cycles before deciding.
Most common causes
- A heartbeat mistaken for a single flash. The heartbeat pulses smoothly and continuously; a code is sharp and repeats after a pause.
- Catching the end of a longer flash pattern rather than the whole of it.
- Watching a combination code — this control uses 6 + X patterns — and seeing only the second part.
- Looking at the furnace control board LED rather than the gas valve LED, which uses a different table entirely.
How to diagnose it
- Watch at least three complete cycles before counting. A code repeats after a distinct pause; a heartbeat does not.
- Look for a combination pattern. This control uses six flashes followed by a further count to indicate the reason for a soft lockout, so a pause mid-pattern is expected.
- Confirm which LED you are watching. The SmartValve LED is on the gas valve; the control board has its own with a different meaning for every count.
- Check the code legend on the wiring label inside the furnace door, which is authoritative for your specific furnace.
How to fix it
- Nothing to fix based on a one-flash reading. Recount first.
- If the furnace is not heating and you cannot resolve the pattern, note where the light is and what it does rather than only the count, and give the technician both.
- Do not act on a code you are not confident you have read correctly. On this control the adjacent counts include a gas valve fault and a limit circuit fault, which need entirely different responses.
Notes
A manufacturer explicitly documenting a count as unused is worth having. It converts a confusing observation into a definite answer: you have miscounted, and the fault is elsewhere.
