Armstrong furnace 3 flashes: Burner failed to light, or lost flame during a heat demand
Three flashes covers two situations: the burner never lit, or it lit and the flame was lost during the heat demand. Which one you have changes where to look.

What it means
Allied Air groups a failure to light and a loss of flame under one code, and the distinction is worth drawing yourself because it splits the diagnosis in half. If the burners never light, the problem is upstream of combustion — gas supply, the igniter, or the gas valve. If they light and go out, the flame existed and something either extinguished it or stopped the control detecting it, which points at the flame sensor, grounding, or unstable gas pressure. This is a single failure rather than a lockout: repeated occurrences escalate to the five-flash Watchguard code.
Most common causes
- No gas reaching the burners — a closed valve, an empty propane tank, or a supply interruption.
- A failed hot surface igniter.
- A flame sensor coated with oxide, so a real flame goes undetected and the control closes the valve seconds after lighting.
- The flame sensor bent out of the flame path.
- Poor grounding, which breaks the flame rectification circuit.
- Low or unstable gas pressure, so a flame lights and cannot be held.
- A restricted flue disturbing the flame once combustion is established.
How to diagnose it
- Watch a start attempt. Whether the burners light at all is the single most useful observation for this code.
- Check whether other gas appliances work. If none do, the problem is the gas supply.
- Check the furnace's manual gas valve is open, and on propane that the tank has fuel.
- Note how long the flame survives if it lights. A few seconds points strongly at flame sensing.
- Recall the stored error history — if a four-flash low flame signal code appears alongside this, the sensor is the likely cause.
How to fix it
- Restore the gas supply if that is the cause.
- Igniter replacement, flame sensor cleaning, grounding checks and gas pressure testing are all technician work.
- Tell the technician whether the burners light at all. It rules out half the causes immediately.
- Do not reset repeatedly to force a run. Each attempt delivers gas to a burner that may not light it.
Notes
