York furnace 9 red flashes: Grounding, reversed polarity, or reversed transformer leads
Nine red flashes covers three electrical faults: poor grounding, reversed line voltage polarity, or reversed transformer leads. York names the transformer explicitly, which most manufacturers do not.
Applies to: York, Luxaire and Coleman gas furnaces using the UTEC integrated furnace control boards documented in technical service letter ST-045-09.
What it means
Flame detection works by rectification, passing a small current through the flame to ground, so the control verifies its electrical environment before operating. This code means that check failed. York's list is broader than most manufacturers': as well as grounding and reversed line polarity, it names reversed transformer leads specifically. That third item matters because it is a wiring error made during installation or a transformer replacement, and it would not occur to most people to check it. All three are wiring faults rather than component failures, and all three almost always follow electrical work.
Most common causes
- Line and neutral reversed at the furnace, at a junction box, or at the outlet feeding it.
- A missing or disconnected ground wire at the furnace chassis.
- Reversed transformer leads, which York names explicitly.
- A loose neutral connection in the circuit.
- A recently replaced outlet or newly run circuit wired incorrectly.
- A furnace that has been moved, replaced, or reconnected.
- A transformer replaced without matching the original lead orientation.
How to diagnose it
- Establish whether any electrical work has been done recently, in the house generally rather than only at the furnace.
- Establish whether the furnace's transformer has been replaced, since York names reversed leads as a distinct cause.
- If the furnace is newly installed or reconnected, treat this as an installation fault.
- Note whether other faults have appeared alongside it, since these conditions produce several codes at once.
How to fix it
- This is electrical work on the furnace supply and belongs to a licensed electrician or heating technician.
- If the furnace was just installed, reconnected, or had a transformer replaced, call whoever did the work.
- Have all three of York's named conditions checked — grounding, line polarity, and transformer lead orientation — rather than only the obvious one.
- Do not attempt to bypass the check. The control is refusing to run because it cannot trust its own flame detection.
Notes
Reversed transformer leads is the item worth remembering here. It is not on most manufacturers' lists, it produces the same symptom as reversed line polarity, and a technician who does not know to check it can spend a long time at the wrong end of the circuit.
