Lennox furnace Alert code 276: Furnace calibration failure, or high pressure switch fault
Alert 276 means the furnace could not complete its calibration routine, or the high pressure switch opened or failed to close while running. It goes into Watchguard mode.
Applies to: Lennox communicating gas furnaces on systems using the S30, S40 or comparable communicating thermostats, as documented in the Lennox Residential Communicating Systems Alert Code Guide.
What it means
A modulating Lennox furnace calibrates itself against the actual restriction of the vent system it is installed in, so it knows what pressures to expect at each firing rate. Alert 276 says that routine did not complete, or that the high pressure switch behaved wrongly during a run. Both point at the draft side rather than at the burner. What makes this alert unusually informative is the specificity of Lennox's own troubleshooting list, which names the cold end heater box, the condensate drain and the drain strainers at the outlet of the box — components that block with condensate and are easy to overlook. It also names levelness of the unit, because a condensing furnace that is not level will not drain, and water that does not drain ends up in the pressure switch circuit.
Most common causes
- A blocked cold end heater box, condensate drain, or the drain strainers at the outlet of that box.
- Cracked pressure switch hoses.
- The furnace not sitting level, so condensate does not drain as designed.
- A blocked or restricted vent or intake.
- An inducer not developing the pressure the calibration routine expects.
- A failed high pressure switch.
How to diagnose it
- Check the vent and intake terminations outside for any blockage, which is the one item on Lennox's list a homeowner can safely look at.
- Note whether the furnace has ever been serviced for a condensate blockage before, since these recur.
- Note whether the alert appeared after the unit was moved or after work on the ductwork, which can leave it out of level.
- Leave pressure measurement and internal inspection to a technician — Lennox specifies measuring operating pressure in inches of water column.
How to fix it
- Clearing the vent or intake termination is homeowner work and worth doing first.
