Carrier furnace Status code 34: Ignition proving failure
Code 34 means the furnace tried to light and could not prove flame. The control tries three more times before locking out with code 14, and Carrier lists a specific flame sense current to check.
Applies to: Carrier 58MCB four-way multipoise condensing gas furnaces and related models using the same integrated furnace control. Bryant and Payne furnaces of the same generation use the same control and code set.
What it means
This is the single ignition attempt that failed, as opposed to code 14 which is the lockout after they have all failed. Carrier's documentation for this code is unusually specific and worth knowing about: it names the required flame sense signal as 0.5 microamps DC minimum with 4.0 to 6.0 microamps nominal, and it states that the green and yellow wire must be connected to the furnace sheet metal. Those two details point at the same thing — flame detection works by passing a tiny current through the flame to ground, and both a dirty sensor and a bad ground break it in ways that look identical from outside.
Most common causes
- Oxide buildup on the flame sensor, which Carrier notes should be cleaned with fine steel wool.
- Control ground continuity problems.
- A flame sensor that is grounded when it should not be.
- A defective gas valve, or the gas valve turned off at the manual shut-off.
- A defective hot surface igniter.
- Low inlet gas pressure.
- Inadequate flame carryover between burners, or rough ignition.
- The green and yellow ground wire not connected to the furnace sheet metal.
How to diagnose it
- Check whether other gas appliances work, which separates a supply problem from a furnace problem.
- Check the furnace's manual gas shut-off is open — Carrier lists it explicitly and it is worth eliminating.
- Watch a start attempt through the sight glass. Burners lighting and going out points at flame sensing; never lighting points at gas or ignition.
- Note whether the code escalates to 14 after four attempts, confirming the sequence.
- Mention recent service work to the technician, since a disconnected ground wire is a documented cause.
How to fix it
- Restore the gas supply or open the manual valve if either is the cause.
- Flame sensor cleaning, igniter replacement, gas pressure testing, and grounding work are all technician tasks.
- Ask the technician to measure flame sense current against Carrier's specification rather than simply cleaning and hoping. The numbers are published for a reason.
- Do not reset repeatedly. Each attempt delivers gas to a burner that may not light it.
Notes
Carrier publishing an exact flame sense microamp range makes this one of the more objectively diagnosable furnace faults. A sensor reading below 0.5 microamps is failing by the manufacturer's own definition, not by judgement.
